If you have ever played a game about catching and battling monsters but wished it was a little faster and a lot more unpredictable then Pokerogue is exactly what you need. It takes the familiar creature collecting formula you already know and turns it into a fast paced roguelike adventure. Instead of walking around towns and earning badges you jump straight into non stop battles where every choice matters.
So how do you actually play Pokerogue.
The game is entirely focused on combat and survival. You start each run by picking a small team of starter monsters based on a point limit. This point system is brilliant because it forces you to think strategically right from the beginning. Do you want one extremely powerful creature or a balanced team of weaker ones to handle different elemental types. Your choice here sets the tone for your entire run.
Once you enter the game you will face wave after wave of wild encounters and rival trainers. The goal is simple survive as long as you can. After every battle your team gains experience points and levels up just like in classic games. However the roguelike twist comes into play after you win. You get to choose a reward which could be a healing item a stat boost or something to help you catch new creatures. Choosing the right rewards is just as important as winning the battles.
Catching new members for your team is crucial. As you progress the enemies get significantly stronger and you will face tough boss fights every ten levels. If your starting team lacks certain elemental advantages you need to catch wild creatures to fill those gaps. The element system works exactly how you remember water beats fire fire beats grass and so on. Knowing your type matchups is the key to surviving the harder waves.
The most important thing to know about Pokerogue is that if your entire team faints your run is over. You lose your current progress and have to start a new run from wave one. But do not worry because even when you lose you still make progress. Every new creature you catch during a run gets added to your permanent roster allowing you to use them as starters in your next attempt.
Pokerogue Dex is highly addictive because it removes all the slow parts of classic monster games and gives you pure strategic combat. It is easy to learn but hard to master making every new run feel fresh and exciting. Build your team manage your items carefully and see how far you can go.
