In an GDC 2021 discussion, Genshin Impact developer Hoyoverse (previously Mihoyo) outright admitted that the process of creating characters was based on generating the most capital possible from D2R Items audiences. Its Raiden Shogun and Kokomi characters that were reruns in March 2022 alone earned the company more than $33 million in revenue.
The moment was immortalized in memes and mockery, much of which stemmed from disappointment of the audience: People attending BlizzCon 2018 were expecting "Diablo 2 Resurrected" announcements. But it also came from the stigma that still surrounds smartphone games that are popular in the West and the US, where the acceptance of smartphones as a gaming platform has been slower than in the other regions of the world.
Since it's launch, "Diablo 2 Resurrected" has gained a reputation boost since alpha and beta tests proved the game was an intense, traditional Diablo experience. (It was also helpful that Blizzard has decided to bring its game onto PC.) This Diablo series is one of the most influential of modern game design, introducing games that focus on the acquisition of randomized "loot" to make your role-playing character more robust. "Diablo 2" it was recently remastered, cemented this loop. Likewise "Diablo 3," which Cheng was also working on, streamlined and evolved it.
The 2018 year was challenging for Cheng and the team, Cheng says it only strengthened their resolve to prove "Immortal" is a game worthy to be part of the Diablo series, since its mobile launch is free and opens the series to its largest possible audience to date. The game will be released on June 2.
Cheng's enthusiasm for the project was palpable in an interview he recently conducted. "I do believe that 'Diablo: Immortal' is going to transform a lot of people's opinions on what they perceive as a mobile game," Cheng told The Washington Post. "That was one of our main goals since the beginning. Let's elevate the standards for the quality of the mobile games."
"I have three kids , and they're all teenagers and they don't make the same distinction between consoles, PCs or mobile devices," Cheng said. "They have a passion for gaming on a variety of platforms."
The game is set to see simultaneous launch on PC with full keyboard-and mouse and controller support, in addition to cross progression and cross play with mobile enabled at the start of the game. This decision came from the testing of the beta when game content creators stated they would need to emulate the game in order to show the game on their streaming platforms said Rod Fergusson, general manager of the Diablo franchise.
"The notion of having no Native support available for PC and creators of content didn't make me feel good," he said. Soon after, work began to bring parity from mobile to PC and ensure that this game works exactly in the same way , with identical users' interfaces and control strategies designed for desk-bound gamers. In the end, the debates from 2018 about why this game exists morphed into fans asking for the time when the game would launch and beg for the possibility of a PC port.
"If you're trying to log in and looking forward to that short 3 to 5 minute jump into the dungeons, a lot of thought went into"okay, where are you? Where do we want to you to be? Are you near a social hub?" Grubb said. "When you login to Westmarch our main social city, you will find portals inside the city to connect the older Rifts and the Challenge Rifts."
The playtime for the session, Grubb said, was significantly longer, at least 45 minutes. It was repeated during the entire day. That's when the team knew it was hitting a nice middle ground between quick sessions and long runs to justifiably park in front of the computer.
The game will basically be a live service. The team is therefore planning plans for a multitude of cheap D2R Items free updates, according to executive producer Peiwen Yao.
